A Canadian humanoid-robot company building the Phoenix humanoid and its Carbon control system.

Sanctuary AI was founded in Vancouver, Canada, in 2018 by co-founders including Geordie Rose and Suzanne Gildert, who also founded the quantum-computing company D-Wave. Its goal is a general-purpose humanoid robot; its product line, Phoenix, released its 6th generation in May 2023 and its 7th and 8th generations in 2024, distinguished by hydraulically driven, highly articulated dexterous hands, paired with an AI control system called Carbon. Early on, the company relied mainly on teleoperation to collect human demonstrations for training. Investors have included Bell, Magna, and the Canadian government, with cumulative funding over CA$140 million by 2024. In November 2024, Rose was replaced by the board amid layoffs; the company reportedly pivoted in 2026 toward providing physical-AI software for existing industrial robots rather than focusing on complete humanoids.
